Devanagari letters have existed and evolved for centuries but there were several technological constraints that withheld the development of this script since the post-letterpress times. The letterforms’ rich history and vibrance that one sees in hand lettering was not able to be translated into digital fonts – until recently. OpenType, Unicode standardisation, and the widespread use of the internet in India have unleashed new avenues for typefaces to exist. There hasn’t been a better time than now to explore these letterforms to create unique designs that celebrate and push the boundaries for Devanagari type design.
